SVU, the Czechoslovak Society of Arts & Sciences - http://www.svu2000.org, is an independent, non-profit international cultural organization dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge, the free dissemination of ideas, and the fostering of contact among people. It berings together scholars, scientists, artists, writers, students, lawyers, businessmen, and others throughout the world who have, because of their ethnic background or professional calling, an interest in the Czech Republic and/or Slovakia, their histories, peoples, and/or their cultural and intellectual contributions.

The 2002 SVU World Congress was held in Pilsen, Czech Republic, June 23-28. Events included the high profile Grand Opening Ceremony with strong diplomatic presence, multiple panels, and cultural events. This year, for the FIRST time in 2l years, the SVU World Congress featured a WOMEN`S ISSUES PANEL, with a specific women`s focus. There will now be a defined program to incorporate gender considerations multidimensional within SVU. The Women`s Issues Panel received entensive press coverage, and also had meetings in Prague with women`s programs and organizations.
